We Interrupt This Home Building for a Storm!

April 29, 2011

We got hit with a major storm. Although I had been following the weather reports and I knew rain was coming, we did not realize it was going to be a major storm. The weather alerts did not come in until the wee hours of the morning. In our home, we take the admonition “L-rd willin’ and the creek don’t rise” very seriously!

We spent about 2 1/2 hours early in the morning out in the thunderstorm trenching the water pouring off the hillside away from the RV. We were concerned that the RV would start sliding again. It was too late to move our van across the creek. We were basically trapped on our property. Later we found out that we fared better than another couple we know. We are grateful.

By the time we were finished trenching and could take photos, the water had already gone down quite a bit. Here are some videos and photos.

This is looking toward our neighbor.

Dave should NOT be standing so high in the water. Normally, the water would be almost to his waist. That is how much rock washed downstream…some of which is also plugging our pipes.

Holy Cow, sister! That’s a lot of run off. Do you like living there? It seems to be very hard work, do you like it?

That kind of runoff is extreme. It is not usually quite that bad. It gets high 3 or 4 times a year, but this year is extra rain. Supposedly, we have already almost as much rain this spring as we had all last year? I think I am remembering that correctly. We are 1/16th of an inch shy of a record month for April. It is hard work, but we just found out the county will help clear your culvert pipes! Dave has already called them. Not sure how that will work, but I hope it works well.
