Memorial Day

June 1, 2010

I would have had this up sooner, but I ended up fighting food poisoning. No fun! So…it is a little late, but still important.

Memorial Day is coming. The following is a brief description of the day taken from an article on a History site. History of Memorial Day

Memorial Day, which falls on the last Monday of May, commemorates the men and women who died while serving in the American military. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the beginning of summer.

There is more to the article…well worth reading.

Remembering the sacrifices of out troops is something I should be doing more of.

As a child, we lived near Arlington for a few years and I can recall hearing taps played at the cemetery–it was very moving then even as a kid.

They and their families give SO much! And they treated so poorly by our government “leadership”. It makes me both sad and angry.
