Natural Entertainment

April 14, 2010

Our chickens are so much fun to watch…the way they move around and follow one another across the meadow. Their interactions are like natural entertainment! Who needs TV with its fakery? This is real and so much more fun!

The Alpha rooster was dethroned and is now the Beta. He has been thoroughly ostracized…so he pretty much keeps his distance. However, there is a hen who loves to roam on her own. And, for some reason, almost as if she is taunting him, she will walk around in his area.

Well, the other rooster is sure keeping an eye on him. If the Beta tries to get personal with a hen, the new Alpha comes flying over and makes it clear who is boss. In fact, the Beta beat the Alpha so soundly that all he has to do is start waving his wings and the Beta ceases and runs.

Today, one of the hens wandered off around the riding mower. The Beta started to follow her. As she passed the mower, the Alpha suddenly stepped out from behind it and the Beta ran right into him. Dave says he did such a quick about-face and took off in the other direction.

It is probably just a matter of time before we have to take the Beta out and put him in the pot. They all sleep together at night…which is amazing. After they get let out in the morning, though, they part company. Our concern is that the Beta will try to get his old place back and we might lose them both in the fight.

Sometimes, the hens like to lay in the shrubbery between trees.

My chicken guy! Since he feeds the now Beta…it has become a lot friendlier.

Boy…what a serious look on his face! Here he is with a hen.
